From Classroom to Kiln: Why I Took the Leap to Become a Full-Time Glass Artist

Michelle and Andy in the Shelden Glass shop in Sherborne

There is a unique kind of comfort in a long career. For 30 wonderful years, my life was shaped by education. It was a journey filled with incredible people, learning, and purpose. But underneath the familiar routine of schedules and terms, a quiet, persistent passion was waiting for its moment in the sun. My glass was always my down time, my creativity in the moments of the intense aspects of education, mental health and safeguarding.

In October 2023, after three decades, I decided it was finally time to take the leap. I stepped away from the classroom to follow a lifelong dream: creating fused glass art full-time.

That was the official beginning of Shelden Glass, and I haven't looked back since.

The Magic of the Medium

People often ask me, "Why glass?"

For me, it's all about the alchemy of the craft. Working with glass requires a beautiful balance of precise geometry and unpredictable magic. You can spend hours meticulously cutting, shaping, and layering vibrant pieces of glass, but the real transformation happens behind the closed door of the kiln. Under intense heat, the solid edges soften, colors merge, and light finds new ways to dance through the material. I like the restrictions and the science of the glass, the aspects of what it will do and what it wont do.

Opening the kiln after a long fire is always a moment of pure anticipation, even now after 20 years, it is pure magic and happiness. Whether I'm crafting a delicate pair of earrings, a striking hair accessory, or a statement decor piece, seeing a design come to life never gets old. Lately, I've even been learning the art of silversmithing so I can handcraft bespoke sterling silver settings worthy of these glass gems.

A Team Effort (Four-Legged Members Included)

Sharing the Joy of Creating

While transitioning from a structured career to running an artisan business is incredibly exciting, it isn't a solo journey. Shelden Glass is a true husband-and-wife team effort. From setting up our newly built studio and handling the logistics of our retail shop in Sherborne, Dorset, to providing a much-needed cup of tea during a long day at the workbench, my husband's support has made this dream possible.

Of course, we also have to credit our official studio supervisors: Frank, Stanley, and Sophie. Our three dogs keep us grounded, ensure we take regular fresh-air breaks in the beautiful Somerset countryside, and excel at their primary job of being the ultimate welcoming committee.

One of the unexpected joys of this new chapter has been the opportunity to step back into a teaching role—but entirely on my own terms. Hosting fused glass workshops, both in local venues and intimate, bespoke sessions right here in my studio, has been incredibly rewarding.

There is nothing quite like watching someone who claims they "aren't creative" pick up a glass cutter for the first time, design their own piece, and experience that same kiln-door magic.

Every Piece Tells a Story

When you buy a piece of handmade art, you aren't just buying glass and silver. You're buying hours of patience, years of learning, and a piece of a story that began with a terrifying, exhilarating leap of faith. Every item that leaves the studio carries a little bit of that courage and joy with it.

Thank you so much for being here, for exploring our new website, and for supporting this creative adventure. Whether you've visited the shop, joined a workshop, or are just browsing our collections online, you are a part of this dream.
